Today I decided that I needed to change a few things in this journey of becoming a fullstack developer. One that was primarly made due to money and well passions.
My first love is my wife and family followed by making videos and technology. My day job is to make videos for online and hybrid courses at a university in Utah and a enjoy it. One of the biggest modivations for me doing the techdegree from Treehouse was to get through it and get a entry level dev job, and even thought I do want to create applications, contribute to open source, or even get some freelance work from it. I don’t know if at this time I want my career to be as a developer.
The New Game Plan
Once I’ve crushed that I will get Wes Bos’s React for Beginners. Followed by some sort of Graphql and or other node.js course and project that I have yet to pick but will update here once I’ve found it.
Once I’m done with the react course it should give me the foundation to jump into redesigning my own website with Gatsby as my front end and then ghost as my publishing backend. Sidenote: I might end up using WordPress but that will be determined later.
While also allowing me the knowledge on how to use API’s from other sites to build out things a marketplace feature.
Slow but Steady
I’m blessed that I don’t hate my job and I’m not desprate to get into a new career. Would becoming a developer be huge salary increase, absolutely! I however do love creating videos and telling stories and for now it’s what provides for most of my needs and other side projects fill in the rest.
This journey is one I won’t be giving up on. I enjoy web technologies to much and use projects that are open source and could eventually help make better or just ensure are the best they can be. For now I’m happy with this decision and hope that whatever you’re trying to learn that this is just another example that things change but as long as you continue forward you’ll eventually get there.
